COVID-19 EMERGENCY EVICTION AND FORECLOSURE PREVENTION ACT
Stops all pending eviction cases for 60 days - at least until February 26, 2021. The only exception is for pending cases involving allegations that the tenant’s ongoing behavior is disrupting or creating a safety hazard.
Tenants who submit a hardship declaration to the court or their landlord will be protected from eviction until May 1, 2021 (except in “nuisance” cases). This form is available from the courts, your landlord, or from us.
In the declaration the tenant must say:
The tenant cannot pay rent or find alternative housing due to financial hardship because of lost income or increased expenses.
OR
The tenant or someone in the household has an underlying condition, which would make moving to a new home a significant health risk.
COVID-19 is Devastating Our Communities:
The Tenant Union Calls for an Equitable Housing Response to the COVID-19 Crisis
COVID-19 is devastating our communities and disproportionately hurting and killing black and brown residents. The Federal, State, and Local governments are working hard to protect those with the most (e.g., banks, large real estate investors) and offering crumbs and minimal protections to the working class and the tenant class. We The Tenants provide the services, produce the infrastructure of community, create the wealth, and pay the majority of local taxes. Yet we have been offered the least and but need the most protections. We will fight to win what’s rightfully ours. Dignified housing for all is the foundation of any healthy community.
While many of the rich have gotten richer, the inequalities of the COVID-19 public health and economic crisis have created possibly the worst eviction, debt, and displacement crisis in the history of our city. However, you are not alone. Together we can resist unjust evictions and reclaim our power. We will stop the evictions if we Know Our Rights, Know Our Resources, and Know and Exercise Our Power.
Know Our Rights
While the universal moratorium on evictions has expired, many tenants still have protections against evictions during the public health crisis and beyond
Know Our Resources
If you are facing eviction, there currently are resources available to help with rental assistance.
If you are facing eviction or having our tenant rights violated there are resources available that can assist you to negotiate with your landlord and/or enforce your rights
Know Our Power
We have the power stop unjust evictions through Community Eviction Defense
We have the power enact systemic changes that stop displacement and empower tenants
